Clearways
No Stopping — Emergency Only
In plain English
This lay-by may only be used in a genuine emergency — like a motorway hard shoulder.
What it means
Some lay-bys, particularly on high-speed roads, are restricted to emergency stopping only. Yellow double lines within the lay-by reinforce this. An emergency telephone is usually provided nearby. Stopping for a rest, to check a map, or to make a phone call does not constitute an emergency and can result in a fine.
Common variations
- No stopping except in emergency
- Lay-by — emergency stopping only
