Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ) explained for UK drivers
If you've ever turned onto a street with yellow lines but no time plate, you're probably inside a Controlled Parking Zone — and that's the most important sign you missed.
What a CPZ is
A Controlled Parking Zone is an area where parking restrictions apply during set hours. The hours are shown on a large entry sign at every road entering the zone — usually a blue and white sign saying 'Zone X — Controlled Zone' followed by days and times.
Why this matters
Inside a CPZ, individual streets often have no time plates on their yellow lines or parking bays — the times from the entry sign apply to everything. If you didn't see the entry sign (e.g. you parked after coming out of a side road), you might wrongly assume there's no restriction.
How to spot a CPZ
Look for the entry sign at the start of the area, often at a junction with a main road. Look for permit-only bays, pay-and-display bays, or yellow lines with no time plates of their own. Use ParkCheck — our matcher recognises 'Zone X — Controlled Zone' as a CPZ entry sign and will tell you the controlled hours.
Visitor parking inside a CPZ
Most CPZs offer visitor permits or scratch cards for residents to give to guests. Some allow short-stay visitor parking via app. If you're visiting, ask your host before you park — and never assume the restriction doesn't apply because you're 'just popping in'.
